What is the Tabata method?

Tabata is a type of short workout performed at intervals that do not require the use of tools. It takes 4 minutes to complete a session. The unusual thing about Tabata is the intensity of the intervals: during the workout, 20 seconds of highly intense exercise are followed by 10 seconds of rest, a pattern which is then repeated, as mentioned, for 4 minutes.
The Tabata method was developed as part of scientific research conducted in 1996 by Dr. Izumi Tabata and his team at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports of Tokyo.
The team of researchers was analyzing different types of exercise and their effect on the energy capacity of athletes, with the aim to find the best way to increase anaerobic and aerobic conditioning.

 

Benefits of the Tabata method

According to Michele Olson, professor of exercise science at the Auburn University of Montgomery in Alabama, “Tabata, which consists of 8 rounds of 20 seconds of extreme physical exertion with only 10 seconds between each 20-second round, needs only 4 minutes to create a metabolic and cardio-stimulating inferno”.
In addition, the Tabata workout method:

By engaging in a specific workout routine i.e. by including sports in your typical week, even sleep improves. In this sense, Tabata is definitely worth trying (unless there are specific medical contraindications), because it is an easy, practical, and a fun way of exercising that is ideal for people who don’t have the time or resources to invest in practicing a sport.
